Our Hand Plier Tool Kits as well as the Heavy Duty Hand Tools have been flying off the shelves! We are currently out of stock of the Hand Plier Kits, however we should be receiving some more within the early new year, so do not despair that you currently can’t find them on the website they should be available again soon!

Inserts for Green Oak?

Oak: A robust and sturdy wood used in many disciplines, primarily within construction and furniture settings. Unfortunately Oak has a significant level of tannic acid and therefore special care must be taken when appropriating a suitable fitting to be used alongside it. An area our Woodfit and KD-Fittings range can cater for, as well as being suitable for multitudes of other types of material in this area including chipboard, plywood and MDF.

The problem:

Green Oak however is a naturally more acidic than standard Oak timber which tends to corrode metals when there is still a presence of moisture within the wood. Mild steel or galvanised mild steel, will still almost inevitably corrode sooner or later, upon drying completely however the wood will stop corroding the parts.
Unfortunately, the acidic salts in the oak will not evaporate and are still available if the timber becomes wet once more and so the corrosion can recommence

The Answer:

The exception to this is Stainless Steel and some of the varying grades, which can be resilient to the tannic corrosion properties of green oak. Providing a significantly increased life expectancy of the structure being produced in comparison to using alternate fitting materials.
